The Green Team

The Green Team was a project to train youth to conduct traditional use research within the AWN traditional land use area. Youth were trained in safety, GPS, mapping, interviewing, videotaping and basic field research.

The project was geared towards youth who were currently enrolled in school ages 14 to 18 years. By providing an opportunity to learn about their culture and history on the land, youth experienced increased self esteem and self awareness through cultural identity and a sense of belonging. Interaction with community Elders and providing a valuable service to the community gave the youth an opportunity for positive self reflection and encouraged better life choices such as staying in school.

The project provided youth with an introduction to field research and data gathering. Future training and career opportunities were presented to the youth to help them understand how they could pursue this area of interest as a career stream.
