ADDICTIONS/MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLOR TAWOW CENTER (THREE-MONTH TERM)

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Preventative Social Programs Manager, the Addictions and Mental Health Counsellor works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide prevention, assessment, referral, clinical counselling and follow-up services to individuals and family members affected by mental health and substance use issues. Services may include confidential individual, family of group counselling about the causes and effect of mental health disorders and/or addictions, support for families dealing with mental health disorders and/or addictions and/or referrals for additional treatment. The Mental Health Addiction Counsellor will also provide education to individuals and groups in the community with a focus on mental health and addiction related topics, such as suicide prevention, substance use, anxiety, and depression, etc.

Duties:

  • Provide mental health counselling regarding the cause, symptoms, and prevention strategies of various mental health diagnoses.
  • Prepare needs and risk assessments.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction issues.
  • Provide outreach counselling in the community.
  • Coordinate and facilitate educational workshops on mental health fand addiction related topics (or work with outside agencies).
  • Prepare funding proposals for mental health and addiction programs and initiatives, as requested.
  • Assist individuals to identify their need for treatment referrals and consult with other treatment providers.
  • Determine funding for treatment programs.
  • Complete Admission and Discharge Criteria and Assessment Tools (ADAT).
  • Arrange transportation for clients to and from treatment centers.
  • Develop and facilitate mental health and addiction-related group counselling programs i.e. Structured Relapse Prevention and/or Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
  • Perform assignments/other duties as required by the Preventative Social Programs Manager.
  • Ensure policies support the confidentiality and privacy of clients, AWN, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders and follow FOIP regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Social Work preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • One year or more experience working with individuals with mental health disorders and addictions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to facilitate group meetings.
  • Ability to deal with the public and colleagues in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Strong conflict management and stress management skills.
  • Utilizes problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing Microsoft Office and budget maintenance software and social media platforms.
  • Basic financial management, budgeting experience, report writing and evaluation,
  • Ability to function cooperatively in a team setting.
  • Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Mandatory Drug and Alcohol testing.

Work Demands:

The position is primarily sedentary with occasional lifting up to ten pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

The incumbent is in a busy office environment, will attend meetings in the community and travel outside of the community as required.

Depending on experience and qualifications AWN offers a comprehensive salary. This position is for a three-month term with the possibility of extension.
