Position Overview:
The Environmental Technical Team Lead plays an integral role in supporting the AEC Environmental Safety and Health Manager and the AEC team. Working closely with the Environmental Safety and Health Manager, this position is responsible for expanding the scope of environmental services offered to the resource industry and related sectors, while also helping to create economic opportunities for members of the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation (AWN).
The primary purpose of the Environmental Technical Team Lead is to manage environmental projects, provide expert technical guidance, and lead the mentoring, training, and development of team members to support company growth and profitability. Core responsibilities include conducting wildlife surveys, performing migratory bird nest sweeps, and coordinating the logistics of field programs.
This role will also act as a backup to the Environmental Team Lead during their absence. During the busy spray season (approximately May through September), the successful candidate will be expected to work a 7-on/7-off schedule, with workdays ranging from 10 to 12 hours. Additionally, the Environmental Team Lead will be on call every other weekend to support field operations and address any urgent environmental issues that may arise.
Duties:
- Provide technical guidance on all environmental and regulatory matters.
- Collaborate with environmental partners to implement multi-disciplinary environmental approaches.
- Supervise and mentor environmental staff including leading training and development requirements.
- Participate and assist in field projects related to environmental services, including, but not limited to, vegetation management, reclamation, the monitoring of ground water, soil and vegetation and related programs.
- Assist with the design, planning and implementation of field programs.
- Contribute to business development, proposal writing, and fostering client relationships.
- Provide support with the preparation of various reports, work plans, and cost estimates.
- Champion health and safety through role modeling and holding employees, contractors, visitors accountable to all safety expectations and standards in a positive and constructive manner.
- Provide oversight and direction to direct reports in accordance with the organization’s policies, processes, and procedures.
- Assist in ensuring that all field incidents (e.g., injuries, hazard observations, property damage, near misses and environmental issues) are reported immediately, investigated thoroughly, communicated and followed up on as required within established timelines.
- Participate in the maintenance of a database which summarizes and reports on environmental performance information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage projects and tasks according to approved scopes of work and deliver quality reports on schedule.
- Communicate to management emerging issues, potential threats, risks, significant opportunities and provide recommendations for operational effectiveness and efficiency.
- Willingness to work in remote locations and travel as required to support field programs.
- Operate ATVs/UTVs (off highway vehicles), as required.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.Sc. or technical degree in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences is preferred.
- Preference will be given to individuals either with their professional designation (P.Biol.) or eligible to obtain their professional designation.
- Previous industry experience in construction (i.e., pipeline, well site, roads, etc.), oil and gas, mining, or forestry is an asset.
- Previous experience with Species at Risk is considered an asset.
- Solid field identification and assessment skills related to wildlife and/or vegetation communities.
- Experience with field surveys and related equipment use.
- Experience with field sampling equipment including Global Positioning Systems (GPS), water quality or soil meters, and handheld data computers.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style.
- Organized, self-motivated and possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Good understanding of environmental legislative requirements.
- Ability or willingness to operate ATVs/UTVs (training provided).
- A valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of Cree culture and Indigenous perspectives is desirable.

This position could involve medium work, most of it standing or walking, lifting, pulling, carrying, pushing, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Environmental Conditions:
The work includes exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Personal Protective Equipment is required to protect the head, eyes, and feet.
