Land and Resource Manager

Position Overview:

The primary purpose of the Land and Resource Manager is to provide professional assistance and support to AWN’s Executive Director and positions supervised in problem-solving; project planning and management; and development and execution of AWN’s goals and objectives.

The Land and Resource Manager is responsible for the successful implementation of the consultation process, project planning and management, and establishing and maintaining sound working relationships and partnerships with industry and the government to improve the social and economic well-being of Nation members.

AWN will rely on the Land and Resource Manager to innovate the Land and Resource department by being familiar with Section 35 rights and current or previous court cases.

Duties:

  • Serve as primary contact for AWN and ensure an efficient and effective flow of communication between the community, industry, and the government to advance the consultation processes.
  • Ensure that AWN actively participates in industry and government-led initiatives that will influence policy, regulatory changes, or landscape-level impacts.
  • Stay informed of industrial activity in the area to determine the impact on traditional use and AWN’s interests in general.
  • Work in cooperation with the Executive Director to negotiate, implement, monitor, and measure items in cooperation agreements, MOU’s, and letters of agreement.
  • Interpret and provide information to the AWN Board on emerging governments policies regarding consultation.
  • Serve as Team Lead for special projects related to consultation as required from time to time.
  • Ensure that Traditional Land Use Information Management is being managed securely and accurately.
  • Act as AWN’s representative on committees, task forces, or Boards formed to deal with consultation issues as appointed by the AWN Board or Executive Director.

PROJECT PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT:

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects related to consultation, land and resources.
  • Ensure that the projects participated in by the organization contribute to the organization’s mission and reflect the priorities of the Board.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects as assigned by the Executive Director.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

  • Work with AWN companies’ senior managers to form strategic partnerships and implement MOU’s, cooperation agreements, and letters of agreements with regards to economic development opportunities.
  • Seek out opportunities for companies within current AWN initiatives that meet the goals and objectives of companies and help to build company capacity.
  • Assist with coordinated program delivery between organizations, such as training opportunities and workforce development initiatives.

GENERAL:

  • Provide monthly progress reports to the Executive Director.
  • In partnership with other AWN staff, organize and implement the AWN Wilderness Camps, AWN special events, and AWN’s participation in industry or government events such as trade fairs, workshops, career fairs, open houses, or tours.
  • Accompany Executive Director and/or President to meetings and assist with scheduling and travel arrangements.
  • Attend annual goal-setting meetings and identify priorities.
  • Perform assignments as required by the Executive Director.
  • Maintain and strengthen client relationships ensuring the timely resolution of issues and concerns.
  • Create an environment of continuous improvement; ensuring work is performed efficiently and effectively.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance (i.e. environment and forest management rules and regulations).
  • Actively minimize the impact of operations on the environment as practically possible.
  • Review completed projects for lessons learned, adjusting processes and people as needed.
  • Champion health and safety through role modeling and holding employees, contractors, visitors, and other members of the Leadership Team accountable to all safety expectations and standards in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Ensure all incidents (injuries, hazard observations, property damage, near misses and environmental issues) are reported immediately, investigated thoroughly, communicated, and followed up on as required within established timelines.
  • Ensure employees receive the required safety training and understand all relevant safe work procedures, standards, and expectations.
  • Provide oversight and direction to direct reports in accordance with the organization’s policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Lead and manage human resources initiatives and activities for direct reports including recruitment, on-boarding, performance management, employee development, training, and general support.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team on corporate business plans and strategies ensuring consistency with organizational goals.
  • Lead department meetings and participate in Leadership Team meetings.

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary business, science or arts degree or diploma or equivalent experience and education combined.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilities.
  • Intermediate level PC skills as well as general computer email, internet knowledge.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous organization or community is an asset.
