Mental Health & Addictions Coordinator

Position Overview:

The Mental Health & Addictions Coordinator works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide culturally appropriate prevention, assessment, referral, clinical counselling and follow-up services to individuals and family members affected by mental health and substance use issues within the Grande Cache area. Services may include confidential individual, family of group counselling about the causes and effect of mental health disorders and/or addictions, support for families dealing with mental health disorders and/or addictions and/or referrals for additional treatment. The Mental Health & Addictions Coordinator will also provide education to individuals and groups in the community with a focus on mental health and addiction related topics, such as suicide prevention, substance use, anxiety, and depression, etc. The Mental Health & Addictions Coordinator is required to facilitate community engagement, collect and manage privileged information, attend to administrative responsibilities and provide general support to the Tawow Community Centre.

Duties:

  • Provide mental health and addiction counselling and support to individuals, families, and groups in the community. Answer phone calls and inquiries concerning available programs and services.
  • Provide mental health counselling regarding the cause, symptoms, prevention and intervention strategies for various mental health diagnosis including Substance Use Disorder, Trauma Disorders, Depression Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Bi-Polar Disorders, Drug- Induced Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders as well as co-occurring Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and other Mental Health Disorders.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction issues.
  • Provide outreach counselling in the community.
  • Coordinate and facilitate educational workshops on mental health and addiction related topics (or work with outside agencies).
  • Assist individuals to identify their need for treatment referrals and consult with other treatment providers.
  • Complete Tawow Client Program Admission and assessments with each new client.
  • Re-assess client’s risk, treatment readiness and overall wellbeing periodically and as needed.
  • Document all client interactions in a timely manner.
  • Accept and make referrals to outside agencies.
  • Liaise with community agencies, treatment centres and AHS resources.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Tawow Community Centre Mental Health & Addictions programs and assess referral programs suitability for our community members.
  • Maintain current database of all Alberta Residential Treatment Programs, Virtual Counselling Programs, Crisis/Help Line directories and local Health and Social Programs and Services.
  • Determine best-fit and complete all Admission documentation and procedures for SUD Treatment Programs.
  • Arrange transportation for clients to and from treatment centres and treatment related appointments.
  • Develop and facilitate mental health and addiction-related group counselling programs i.e. Structured Relapse Prevention and/or Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to remain calm, respectful, and non-judgmental in all interactions.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of local Indigenous culture, community values and traditions.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and facilitation skills.
  • Experience with basic budgeting, financial reporting, and program evaluation.
  • Comfortable working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Clearly demonstrates professionalism especially confidentiality.
  • Strong conflict management and stress management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to facilitate group meetings.
  • Understanding of local Indigenous culture, values and community.
  • Demonstrates compassion to the needs, welfare, dignity and feelings of others; listening, understanding and respecting opinions, perspectives and motivations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to facilitate group sessions from 2-50 people with and without using audio visual equipment.
  • Basic financial management, budgeting experience, report writing and evaluation skills.

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mental Health & Addictions, Social Work or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • One or more years experience working with individuals with mental health disorders and addictions.
  • Advance level PC skills as well as general computer email, internet knowledge.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Power Point.

Certifications, Licenses, and/or Designations:

  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR & AED.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with $2,000,000 in business liability insurance.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required prior to employment).

Work Demands:

  • Primarily office-based with some travel required.
  • Periods of sitting (e.g. driving, desk work) and standing and moving during programming.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs) as required for materials or event setup.
